Sonora, CA– California Highway Patrol Officials are cautioning motorists to drive defensively during the upcoming holiday weekend.
CHP Lt. Mike Ayala reminds drivers to obey the speed limit, don´t drink and drive, and be sure to buckle up. He adds that travelers should allow plenty of drive time as traffic tie-ups can be expected. Last year, 60 people were killed in California during the Thanksgiving driving period, half of whom were not wearing a seat belt.
There were also more than 1,500 people arrested for driving under the influence of either drugs and/or alcohol. CHP officials say they will be implementing the Maximum Enforcement Period, putting every available officer on the road.
