San Andreas — The long awaited Calaveras County Housing Element has been approved.
The plan outlines the projected housing needs of the county through 2009, and provides solutions to meet those needs.
The Housing element is an update to the county´s 10-year-old plan approved in 1996. The new plan allows for higher density housing and apartment complexes. However it doesn´t encourage the development of affordable housing within the county.
Officials say the new housing element will make it easier for first-time home buyers within the county to secure funds from the state.
The plan calls for almost 33 hundred homes to be built between 2001 and 2009, with nearly 13 hundred of those going to low income or very low income families.
