Legislation To Be Considered To Protect Children From Violent Video Games

A coalition of parents, child advocates, and legal experts are battling the gaming industry´s financial interests.

Child psychologist and Assembly Speaker pro Tem Leland Yee will be joined by girl scouts, psychiatrists, and a Constitutional law professor Tuesday at 11 am to discuss protecting kids from ultra-violent video games.

Specifically the legislation would prohibit the sale and rental of violent video games that depict serious injury to human beings in a way that is especially cruel to people who are 16 years of age or younger.

Under Yee´s proposal those who violate the act may be liable in an amount of up to $1,000 for each violation. In addition, such described video games would have to be labeled, “This game may not be sold to anyone under 17 years of age.”

After the discussion and press conference, a hearing and vote will take place in Sacramento.
