California prison officials plan to begin construction of a new death row facility next to the existing facilty at San Quentin State Prison this fall.
Officials had considered other sites for the $220 million facility, but state law requires that California´s only death row be located at San Quentin.
Opponents of the proposed project say it will have a negative impact on traffic and wildlife, and is a poor use of the area´s waterfront property.
The plan is expected to go before Governor Arnold Schwarzennegger later this month.
