The U.S. Census bureau reports that Calaveras County is one of the 10 fastest growing counties in California.
The federal government says Calaveras grew by 2.9% from 2003 to 2004. The county building department says it has also seen at least a 20% increase in building permit applications.
County officials say the increase in population can be attributed to the county´s popularity among retirees. Officials say the state of California added more than 400,000 residents between 2003 and 2004.
