The auto club AAA of Northern California will once again be commemorating Earth Day by collecting used automotive batteries from local residents.
A AAA spokesperson says more than 200,000 old batteries go un-recycled each year, which poses a major environmental hazard, as well as a substantial safety risk. So from now until April 23rd, local residents are encouraged to bring their used batteries to a collection point for proper disposal.
For every battery dropped off, the club says it will donate $2 to a local non-profit organization, and those dropping off used batteries do not have to be AAA members. The drop-off location for the motherlode is Vic´s Towing on North Washington Street in Sonora.
The auto club says last year´s battery roundup collected more than 4,500 batteries and raised nearly $10,000 dollars for local environmental groups.
