Calaveras County Water District officials have asked the Sheriff´s Department to investigate an unfunny April Fools Day letter warning customers about a major irrigation water surcharge.
The letter is signed “Ms. April Ufuls, Director of CCWD.”
Officials have no idea how many of its customers may have received similar letters. The letter was written on fake CCWD letterhead and the post office could not deliver the letter so sent it to the real CCWD office. The discovery did not amuse CCWD workers. The letter informs its´ recipient that their property is among 25 potential water sampling sites along the Calaveras River and that testing will be done this month.
The letter reads “Please be advised a surcharge will be enforced for any water extracted from the Calaveras River and the current rate is .13 a gallon.” Since people are charged by the thousands of gallons, the figure given would not be realistic. The letter thanks the recipient for cooperating and directs questions or concerns to the district office.
Finally a phone number is listed but that number belongs to a Mountain Ranch resident who claims to having nothing to do with the letter and who said the phone number must have been chosen at random.
