SACRAMENTO (AP) __ State income tax collectors are disconnecting their file-by-phone program known as TeleFile because of a drop in usage.
The program enabled taxpayers who take standard deductions to file tax information by pressing the numbers on a push-button phone.
Use of the program peaked in 1998 when 299-thousand taxpayers phoned in their tax information, but last year the number of
TeleFilers dropped to 74-thousand.
Tax officials say many taxpayers will still be able to file tax forms by computer.
