Sierra Pacific To Layoff 26 Mill Workers in Standard

Sierra Pacific Industries spokesman Ed Bond says a shortage of logs is forcing the timber company to layoff 26 workers from its Standard sawmill.

Bond says the layoffs are considered permanent. The Standard Mill makes pulpwood for paper products and produces lumber. Employees not being laid off are having their schedules tweaked, but will still be working a 40-hour week. Bond says the amount of logging allowed in the Stanislaus National Forest has declined drastically in recent years.

In Tuolumne County Sierra Pacific Industries operates a sawmill in Standard and a small log mill operation near Chinese Camp.
