A Major Mail Theft/Fraud Bust In Amador County

Ione, CA—Six people were arrested during a traffic stop and search that uncovered stolen debit cards, credit cards, IDs, and even postal master keys.

After recently pulling over a Toyota Avalon sedan in the area of Martin Lane and Highway 88 in Ione with six occupants, an Amador County Sheriff’s deputy discovered numerous identification documents, debit cards, credit cards, checks, and personal identifying information belonging to multiple victims inside the car. Sheriff’s officials say they also discovered several US Postal Service master keys, used to access communal mailboxes, as well as a lot of mail addressed to other people.

The vehicle search also yielded equipment and materials used to create and alter bank cards and checks, as well as several bogus IDs, bank cards, and financial documents at various stages of modification. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were also found in the car.

The six suspects were taken into custody and booked on multiple felony charges related to identity theft, mail theft, fraud, false impersonation, and narcotics violations.

“This case remains under investigation, and additional charges may be filed,” according to sheriff’s officials, who added, “The Amador County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to promptly report suspicious activity around mailboxes and to regularly monitor financial accounts for unauthorized activity.”
