Sacramento, CA — California´s campaign cop is dropping about 225 cases because of funding and staff shortages.
Instead of fines, some candidates and public officials accused of violating election or ethics laws will be getting warning or advisory letters from the Fair Political Practices Commission.
The FPPC has lost about 30 staff positions, a third of its work force since 1991.
Meanwhile, the number of enforcement cases has increased and its staff has begun a triage to whittle down their work load to a more manageable level.
That means dropping about 225 cases that the agency´s executive director says it would love to pursue if it had the resources.
