Oakland, CA — Bill King, the longtime Oakland Athletics radio voice, has died.
His signature call of “Holy toledo!” became a household phrase for decades in the San Francisco Bay area. He died today from complications following hip surgery.
The team didn´t release his age. The A´s announced King died from pulmonary embolus, three days after undergoing hip surgery for an injury sustained earlier this year.
King also was the lead radio broadcaster for the Golden State Warriors and Oakland Raiders, while also working for a time on the San Francisco Giants´ broadcast team.
King also served in the Army during World War Two. King is preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Stephens. He also is survived by stepson John Stephens of Sausalito and grandchildren Julia and John Lowenthal. Memorial services were pending.
