CCAS no new dogs due to disease

San Andreas, CA – The Calaveras County Animal Services (CCAS) has issued an urgent message to the public about a deadly disease affecting the shelter.

The shelter will not be admitting any new dogs, stating, “Members of our community, our animal shelter is currently facing a challenging situation in which multiple dogs that were impounded from the Railroad Flat area on Saturday, 4/18/26, are clinically ill and have tested positive for canine parvovirus. Since parvovirus is very contagious to other dogs and can be fatal, in order to control the spread of this disease, CCAS will not be admitting any new dogs to the shelter unless they are found critically ill or injured.”

Shelter officials announced that the no-dog-drop-off policy will remain in effect for the next 14 to 21 days. Animal services officials added, “If you find a dog and pick it up, please make sure you are willing to make other arrangements besides dropping it off at our shelter.” They provided these ways to help a found animal:

• Check with neighbors to see if they recognize the animal.
• Take the animal to the nearest vet or shelter to have it scanned for a microchip.
• Post the animal on social media and ask people to share it.
• Make flyers and post them throughout the community where the animal was found.

Animal services said the remainder of its services will continue as usual, and individuals interested in adopting a furry new family member must schedule an appointment.
