Update at 12:36 pm: The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies conducted a thorough search of the entire Columbia Elementary School campus and did not locate anything suspicious. The scene is secure, and the sheriff’s office thanks the public for their patience and cooperation during the incident.
Original story posted at 11:41 am: Columbia, CA — The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports there was something sounding like “shots fired” near Columbia Elementary School, shortly before 11 am.
Deputies have been on the scene investigating what it was. The sheriff’s office adds, “There is no reported danger to the school. Deputies will continue checking the area.”
Officials are also looking into whether the sound may have originated from over near the Columbia Airport.
Be prepared for deputies in the area. The sheriff’s office is encouraging people to avoid the area for the time being. More details will be provided as they are released.
