Sacramento, CA — Antigambling activists are trying to get Mega Millions out of California.
A Sacramento judge held a hearing yesterday over a lawsuit filed by the California Coalition Against Gambling Expansion. The group claims the lottery game is illegal because it´s not run solely by the state and that violates the intent of the 1984 voter initiative authorizing California´s lottery.
Mega Millions is run jointly by the 12 states that participate in the game. State officials argue that it´s just like any other state lottery game.
They say California retains control over its administration within the state, including how and where tickets are sold. The judge says he´ll issue a ruling in the case sometime after March first.
