Modesto, CA — Two high-profile Bay Area attorneys will be representing Scott Peterson as he tries to get his murder convictions overturned.
Cliff Gardner of Oakland and Lawrence Gibbs of Berkeley have been hired by Peterson´s parents to represent their son during the habeas corpus portion of the appeal process.
With death penalty appeals being automatic in the state, the habeas corpus part of the process focuses on presenting new evidence or possible errors by the defense team.
Gardner and Gibbs both have about 25 years experience each in appealing death penalty cases.
Gardner has represented Lyle Menendez, and Gibbs represented Erik Menendez, the brothers convicted of murdering their parents in Southern California in 1989.
Peterson has been on death row at San Quentin since being convicted in the killings of his pregnant wife and the fetus she carried.
