Drivers Yield To Locomotive Today

If you´re driving in the areas of Valley Springs, San Andreas, Angels Camp or Murphys today.. don´t be surprised to see a huge steam engine rolling past.

The 90-ton vintage Shay logging locomotive is being hauled — by truck — to White Pines Lake to it´s new home at the Sierra Logging Museum.

Patrick Karnahan, spokesman for the museum, says the historic Yosemite Sugar Pine Railroad locomotive was purchased last year from the Nevada Railroad Museum in Bolder City. The Friends of the Logging Museum successfully raised enough funds to pay for the move.

The massive engine was trucked over the Tehachapi Mountains on two special low-boy trailers.

The route today will bring the largest portion of the steam engine up Highway 12 from Valley Springs to San Andreas, then along Highway 49 through Angels Camp. The truck and cargo will head-up Murphys Grade Road to the Museum near Arnold.

The engine will be displayed and eventually operated at the museum.
