Veterans Ceremony held to open day 2 of Mother Lode Fair

Sonora, CA — Friday at the Mother Lode Fair pays special tribute to local Veterans.

In addition to Veterans getting in for free today (Friday), when the gates swung open at 9 am, there was a presentation of the colors (flag ceremony), a performance of the National Anthem, a prayer, and a tribal blessing.

It took place in front of the Creekside building (where there is a special exhibit inside this year honoring local Veterans) in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the United States.

Community member Ron Hamilton helped to spearhead the effort. He says, “We started in January. I contacted Frank Smart (leader of local Veterans organizations), who connected me with the Memorial Museum in downtown Sonora. Steve Wilson, my son-in-law Tyler, my daughter Emily, and I have worked for six months collecting and scanning pictures of Veterans. We have over 600 pictures of people from Tuolumne County who have served in the military. We also have over 4,000 names on a wall of people from Tuolumne County who have served in the military.”

Veteran Frank Smart was also on hand today, among the Veterans, greeting fairgoers and providing history and context to many of the displays.

In addition, there is an exhibit in the Creekside building with pictures and biographies recognizing 175 leaders from various fields and industries who have helped shape Tuolumne County. It is part of the county’s 175th anniversary.

Other notable happenings on Friday include the Hometown Voice competition on the main stage from 3-6 pm and the rodeo in the arena starting at 5 pm.

The fair runs through Sunday from 9 am -11 pm. On Saturday will be the afternoon livestock auction and the evening truck and tractor pulls. On Sunday evening, there is the Destruction Derby.
