After an extensive debate at the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors yesterday, it was decided to borrow the money needed to start sealing up the Jamestown Landfill.
$2.25 million will be transferred from the County´s Traffic Mitigation Fund to Public Works for the project, unless a more suitable outside loan source can be located.
But either way, the loan will mean an increase in garbage collection fees of just under a dollar a month for weekly residential trash pickup.
The Public Works department already has more than three million dollars earmarked to begin sealing up the landfill by this summer´s deadline.
The state had threatened to levy fines if work wasn´t started by this summer. The Ferma Corporation was awarded the contract for the work, after they submitted a bid of just under 4-and-a-half million dollars.
