Keiko the killer whale, star of the Free Willy films of the 1990s, was memorialized Friday night.
About 700 mostly elderly people overwhelmed the facilities of the Oregon Coast Aquarium. That´s where Keiko spent more than two years before being flown to Iceland in 1998 on the first step toward his return to the wild.
Candles were lit. There were songs and poems and film of Keiko swimming free, shown in public for the first time. The Free Willy-Keiko Foundation and Portland songwriter and producer Theresa Demarest are incorporating the footage into a “Keiko Legacy Tour” aimed at release this fall.
