Safeway Stores Suffer Fourth-Quarter Losses

Supermarket giant Safeway reports it suffered a fourth-quarter loss of nearly $696 million.

The Pleasanton-based chain, which also operates Pak-n-Save stores – with a location in Sonora – blames most of the loss on the grocery strike throughout Southern California that began in October. The ongoing strike is affecting 289 Safeway stores.
