Farmers who get water from the San Joaquin River are appealing a court decision that will return water to the river to restore salmon runs.
The Friant Water Users Authority says it wants a Sacramento appeals court to review a decision by a Sacramento federal judge.
Judge Lawrence Karlton ruled in August that the federal government killed salmon runs on the river by illegally operating Friant Dam over the last half century.
The farmers want to challenge that ruling before hearings determine how much water is returned to the river.
Environmentalists say they expect the judge´s ruling to stand.
