Increased Deer Accidents Prompt Motorist Warnings

Authorities are urging drivers to be especially careful on the freeways during the next few weeks because it´s the time of year when deer are on the move.

Autumn marks the annual deer migrations, and that leads to more of the animals getting hit on the freeways.

A Caltrans official says maintenance workers removed about six dead deer every day from Bay Area highways last month.

September´s total tally was 155, compared with 20 in February.

Wildlife officials say the mating season — which runs from August through October — also contributes to the seasonal increase in deer fatalities.

Drivers are warned to be especially alert at night because deer can be temporarily blinded by car headlights.
