Five feet was perhaps all that seperated Eva Schicke from life and her ultimate death.
The CDF firefighter who died earlier this month battling a blaze in the Stanislaus National Forest made it within five feet of the road where two colleagues found shelter.
According to details in a newly released preliminary report, the fire turned suddenly on Schicke´s seven-member Helitack crew less than a minute after the winds shifted directions. Schicke was just five feet behind a co-worker when she went missing in the dark smoke.
Funeral services for Schicke were held Monday in Angels Camp.
