Stepped Up Security Around California

Governor Davis has ordered stepped up precautions at bridges, borders and other potential terrorist targets after the Bush administration raised the national terror alert level to orange. He´s also asking the federal government for some help with added security costs.

Davis says the state has $15 million of federal money for homeland security. Even so, he says the state and its cities have been reimbursed only about “30 cents on the dollar” for the added security costs.

One of the spots that´s had to spend significantly more money for security since the September 11th attacks is the Golden Gate Bridge. Bridge officials Tuesday decided to close the road under the south side of the bridge and the trail under the north side so that officers providing security have a smaller area to patrol.
