A reporter from San Francisco says he was about 15 feet away from a Marine corporal when he was fatally wounded in a firefight with Iraqi soldiers. 21-year-old Corporal Mark Evnin of South Burlington, Vermont had been based at Twentynine Palms, California.
His mother was told the scout sniper died from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Reporter John Koopman of the San Francisco Chronicle said the death of Evnin was the first in the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines.
The reporter told the Free Press in Burlington, Vermont that at first it appeared Evnin€™s wound was NOT life threatening and he was able to talk to a corpsman and the unit€™s sergeant major before he was evacuated. But he died in a helicopter taking him from the battle site.
