Recall Supporters Now Claim 1.6 Million Signatures

Republican activists aiming to recall Governor Davis say they´ll have 1.6 million signatures delivered to county elections offices on Monday.

Meanwhile, a state appeals court in Sacramento took no action yesterday on a lawsuit to make county officials count those signatures faster. Recall supporters are suing Secretary of State Kevin Shelley and Solano, Tehama, and Sacramento counties.

Some recall backers say the Secretary of State´s office is letting counties move slowly to stall a recall election until March. Analysts say that would help the governor stay in office.
