Sonora High Cheerleaders Take Top Prize

Two big victories for the Sonora High School Varsity Wildcats over the weekend. One was on the football field Friday night with a big win in their homecoming game. The ´Cats blew out Manteca High 43 -0.

The other victory involves the Wildcat´s Varsity Cheerleading Squad. They won the national Qualifier Cup and first place trophy in a cheerleading competition held in Modesto this weekend.

“The Sonora High Wildcats were flawless,” said Steve Brawley, a proud dad of one of the Wildcat cheerleaders. “They didn´t miss a beat.”

This is a monumental victory for the local squad and a first time win for the school at this level of competition.

The event was held at Johnannson High School and attracted cheerleading squad from Nevada, Sacramento and the greater Central Valley. This was the second time the event was held at the school in Modesto.

“All the parents that were there with the kids were very excited,” Brawley said. What compounded the excitement of the win, Brawley said, was that the Sonora girls didn´t think they had won it.

“They don´t get to see the other girls do their routines,” the Sonora resident explained. “So, they don´t know if (the other teams) had fallen or had missed a routine in their performance.”

The first place trophy and the Qualifier Cup will now be displayed in the trophy case at Sonora High. The cheerleading squad now goes on to compete in the state championships in San Diego this January.
