Man Hunt For Shooting Suspects

Law enforcement authorities are conducting a man hunt this afternoon for two persons who shot at a Bureau of Land Management ranger in the Red Hills area of Tuolumne County west of Jamestown.

Sheriff´s Lt. John Steely says details are still sketchy at this time, but initial reports confirm that two men shot at a BLM ranger. It´s not known what prompted the confrontation. The unidentified BLM ranger escaped injury in the shooting. The two suspects fled on foot in the Red Hills area.

They are described as both white male adults in their early to mid-20s.

One suspect is about 6-foot tall, 225 pounds, with brown hair and is unshaven. He is wearing a black tee shirt and blue jeans. The second suspect is 5´8″ tall, 140 to 150 pounds, clean shaven, and wearing blue jeans with no shirt.

Authorities now say they have recovered a weapon believed used in the shooting, a 2-inch Smith and Wesson revolver.

Sheriffs deputies and the California Highway Patrol are setting up a command post in the area and that roads in the region, Red Hills Road and Old Don Pedro Road, from Chinese Camp to J-59 are now blocked off.

A CHP helicopter is conducting an air search of the isolated area.

Authorities are asking for people to stay out of the area
