Jamestown Blaze Chars Hillside

Published Jun 7, 2002 3:00 pm : Updated Jan 31, 2009 5:27 pm

Firefighters converged on wildlands near the Golden Oaks Subdivision in Jamestown this noontime. Tuolumne County Fire Marshall Kary Hubbard says children playing with matches touched off the fast-moving fire.

The blaze was fanned eastward from 7th Street up a steep oak tree and brush-covered hillside toward some homes initially, but crews managed to get it surrounded with the help of a helicopter, two air tankers, an air attack plane and three hand crews. Eleven fire engines, three water tenders and a bulldozer also worked the fire. The fire burned about 5-acres. Crews were mopping up through the afternoon in the area along Campo Seco Road, Seco Street and Golden Oaks Drive.
