Derailment Said Not Dangerous

Placer County authorities say a derailed cargo train that has chemicals on board is not dangerous. Six cars on the 73-car Burlington Northern and Santa Fe train went off the tracks outside Colfax at 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Placer County Sheriff´s Captain Rick Armstrong says two of the cars were carrying an ammonia sulfate powder. Armstrong says the powder is not dangerous when it´s by itself.

One of the cars is hanging over a steep cliff known as China Wall, but Armstrong says it´s not in danger of falling. No injuries have been reported. An Amtrak train from Chicago to Emeryville got stuck behind the derailment. Its passengers are being put on buses.
