A Fresno man has been sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for killing a man in a barroom gunfight last year. Roberto Rangel will spend at least 57 years behind bars for the murder of Norberto Castillo. The shooting took place last June at the El Corral Club.
Rangel also was sentenced to seven years for shooting friend Pedro Montoya. He was hit by two bullets after they passed through Castillo. Rengel had asked for a new trial, but the judge rejected it. He also was ordered to pay a ten thousand dollar fine.
The defense had argued it was a case of self-defense. Castillo was found with a gun, but police said it was broken and not loaded.
