The Pigeon Point Lighthouse has been warning sailors about hazards off the southern San Mateo and Santa Cruz coasts for most of its 129 years.
Now, officials say the lighthouse itself is a hazard. Something caused two huge pieces of iron and brick to fall from the southeast side of the 115-foot tower in December. Since then, the lighthouse has been off limits to visitors and state park guides. Authorities are concerned that more big chunks could fall on tourists – so the lighthouse is closed, probably at least until the end of the year.
