A state senators says he will propose a one dollar toll hike on Bay Area bridges to help pay for expanded public transportation.
State senator Don Perata says a one dollar increase on seven bridges will in bring an extra 150 million dollars a year.
That money could be used for expanding bus and train lines in the Bay Area.
Tolls last rose to two dollars in 1998. Perata says motorists on the East Coast are used to paying tolls more than five dollars.
He will formally announce his plan Tuesday, with the support of public transportation officials and environmentalists.
Golden Gate Bridge operators have said they may need to increase the three dollar toll to as much as five dollars. They set tolls independent of the Bay Area´s main transit commission.
