Fire Ants Could Get Expensive

A University of California study says that if red fire ants become established in the state, the cost to agriculture could be more than 100 million dollars a year.

Costs would include damage to crops, disruption of harvests and damage to equipment. Officials are currently battling the vicious little bugs in 10 counties. The study says annual costs to the state´s economy overall could hit 989 million dollars.
