Firefighters in the Motherlode were busy on the Fourth of July. Fire Marshall Kary Hubbard says Tuolumne and Calaveras County firecrews responded to 87 calls during the 24-hour period. This number is significantly higher than the total last year, Hubbard said this morning.
Firefighters were hopping yesterday, with 36 of those calls fireworks related.
The fire marshall stressed as the long holiday weekend continues, fireworks are not allowed in Tuolumne County and parts of Calaveras County. Serious fines, and possible jail time, can result if a fire is started from fireworks.
