Union Pacific is testing a new hybrid electric and diesel locomotive at its Roseville switchyard – in hopes of
cutting down the railway´s trademarks plumes of polluting smoke.
The new locomotive is called the “Green Goat,” and it uses technology similar to that in hybrid cars. Officials say it will reduce emissions by 85 percent and fuel usage by 35 percent.
The Green Goat is a switcher locomotive used to tow railcars around switch yards. And officials say a number of major U.S. railways have expressed an interest in purchasing Green Goats for the task.
