Complex Grows, Nears Containment

Drenching rain, cooler temperatures and higher humidity came to the aid of firefighters battling the Gate complex on the Nevada-state line near Topaz Lake. The flames now are 70 percent surrounded with full containment forecast for Saturday. The three fires in the complex are estimated to have covered just over nine-thousand acres. Fire bosses are adding the 709-acre Buckeye fire 15 miles east of Gardnerville and twice as far from Topaz to the complex, bringing its total acreage to 9758. The storms that soaked the fire complex also produced lightning that sparked eleven new fires in western Nevada. The largest was 25 acres and all were quickly controlled or extinguished by a combination of rain and fire crews.
