Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon reports that his campaign had only five million dollars in the bank at midyear and is facing nearly that much in unpaid bills. But Simon says he´s ahead of his goals and has been keeping pace with Governor Davis in fund-raising since mid-February. A Davis spokesman describes Simon´s campaign as practically broke. According to a summary of the campaign report he must file by next Wednesday, Simon had five million dollars in his campaign treasury and nearly five million dollars in unpaid bills on June 30th. Davis reported earlier this month that he had 31-point-six million dollars in his campaign account at the end of June and 422-thousand dollars in debts. He raised nearly 14 million dollars in the first half of the year.
