The mention of God in public places has been challenged in California. But in the state´s Bible Belt, some governments embrace the name.
Today, Bakersfield city council members held a ceremony in City Hall to formally dedicate the words “In God We Trust” mounted above the city seal last week.
City Council member Jacquie Sullivan is a devout Christian who led the motto campaign. She says she wants to return to the nation´s early commitment to Christian ideals.
President Dwight Eisenhower made the words “In God We Trust” the nation´s motto 46 years ago.
Not everyone is happy with the city´s decision. Some say placing the motto at Bakersfield City Hall violates the separation of church and state.
