West Point Firefighters Hurt

Three CDF firefighters from Calaveras County were critically injured when their fire engine plunged 60 feet down a freeway embankment in San Bernardino. The fire engine was traveling southbound on Interstate 15 when it rolled off the freeway at about 6 p.m. yesterday en route to a fast-moving brush fire. The crew was based at the West Point CDF station and had been called to supplement San Bernardino area crews. CHP investigators say the engine´s drive shaft malfunctioned, forcing the truck to careen across the freeway and roll over the side.
