The second Sonora Soap Box derby in modern times drew crowds of well-wishers to cheer on the nearly 40 entrants this year. The event on Stewart street downtown drew several local organizations, including the Tuolumne County Historical Society, which sold vintage pictures of the original Derby several decades ago. Coordinator Sheila Wilkinson says the reincarnation of the competition has gained momentum, and plans will be made shortly for next year. Temperatures were a bit more comfortable than last year, and several local organizations and private vendors enhanced the event.
Racers in the semi-finals went down each of the two tracks this year in one modification from the initial contest. Wilkinson says minor adjustments will fine tune the event as time goes by.
Winners in this year´s event:
Division 1: Ian Foreman, Age 9
Division 2: Megan Martinelli, Age 11
Division 3: Canyon Fox, Age 13
