Park Fire Prompts Voluntary Evacuations

A wildfire in Uvas Canyon County Park west of Morgan Hill still is burning out of control. Four hundred firefighters are battling the blaze, which has topped 200 acres. A spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry says two outbuildings have burned but no homes. But several residents who voluntarily evacuated say they´ve seen houses burning around the area. Winds are pushing the blaze southeast. Heavy smoke from the fire is visible in Santa Cruz. April Williams says it´ll be a sleepless night for her and her husband until they know what´s become of their home. Conditions in the region are extremely dry and the fire is fueled by oak, brush and grasses. Uvas Canyon is a lushly wooded park of more than 1,200 acres on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
