The U.S. Forest Service and Columbia College´s partnership becomes official today. The Baker Station, located along Highway 108, 56 miles east of Sonora near Kennedy Meadows, will be dedicated to the college this afternoon during an 1 o´clock ceremony.
Funding from a $300,000 Forest Service grant will help renovate the complex starting next summer. The former 1800s-era stagecoach way station, and most recently a Caltrans maintenance facility, will be converted into a summer learning institute for college ecology and geology classes and fieldwork instruction.
The public is invited to attend today´s dedication.
