The Sonora City Council learned about possible legal issues of having voters place a sales tax increase on the ballot.
City Administrator Greg Applegate said the city attorney briefed the council on the problems Monday.
Applegate said Proposition 218, which was designed to prevent government organizations from raising taxes without voter approval, might also limit citizen’s ability to seek a tax increase.
“It appears that the state may have handcuffed the public in terms of having them put a sales tax measure on the ballot,” Applegate said.
The City Administrator says the council could request special legislation from the state to put the sale tax question before Sonora voters.
Applegate said he’d ask for the council’s direction on what to do next.
