Calaveras County Wins $300,000 Judgment

Calaveras County has won a $300,000 settlement from the East Bay Municipal Utilities District for water pollution in the Mokelumne River.

The Utilities District, which pipes water from Calaveras County to East Bay, allowed lime from it´s Pardee Center plant to overflow into a drainage ditch that eventually connected with the river. The pollution had being going on for several years.

A Fish and Game warden looking for poachers discovered it in April 2001.

The settlement includes $150,000 in penalties and $90,000 in donated projects to protect and preserve the county’s natural resources.

“Calaveras County’s pristine natural resources offer a great quality of life and support local industries,” said Calaveras County District Attorney Jeffrey E. Tuttle. “My office takes violations of these laws seriously.”
