Controller”s Race Too Close To Call

Published Nov 7, 2002 2:00 am : Updated Jan 31, 2009 5:35 pm

The race for California controller is still too close to call.

The latest numbers show Democrat Steve Westly leading Republican state Senator Tom McClintock by 25-thousand-830 votes. It could be days before the remaining absentee ballots are tallied and the winner determined.

Westly stopped short of declaring victory today, but says he´s optimistic. Should Westly win, Democrats would win all eight statewide offices — their first such sweep since 1882. Republicans last won all statewide offices in 1946.

The only current Republican statewide officeholder, Secretary of State Bill Jones, couldn´t run because of term limits.
