I.B.M. has agreed to build two supercomputers faster than anything in existence.
I.B.M. signed a $267 million contract to build the computers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The computers will reclaim the title of world´s fastest from a Japanese computer built by N.E.C.
The two new computers will be used for nuclear weapons simulation and other research.
The U.S. Department of Energy will announce the contracts today in Baltimore at a supercomputer conference.
The supercomputers will be capable of crunching numbers 400 thousand times faster than a home computer.
