Legislation to transfer federal land at Lake Tahoe to the Washoe Tribe has won Senate approval.
Nevada Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign say the bill gives the tribe 24 acres of Forest Service land just north of Skunk Harbor, on Tahoe´s east shore, for cultural purposes. It prohibits commercial, residential or recreational development.
Reid says he hopes the bill could make it through the House this year, but if it doesn´t he´s certain the Washoe Tribe will get the land next year.
