For many Americans, Thanksgiving is a time of reflection – and also a time to get ready for the busy holiday shopping season.
Some retailers are hoping that not all shoppers take a holiday. K-mart stores are open today. The struggling chain is running a number of promotions it hopes will get people into the stores.
Retailers have modest expectations for the season. The main industry trade group — the National Retail Federation — looks for sales to rise about four percent this year. That would be the weakest increase since 1997.
Some of the biggest winners are expected to be the discounters and online retailers. A number of business forecasts look for double-digit-percent increases in Internet commerce.
